Making Android Apps has sort of always been thought of as some magical process that only programmers can do. It was never thought possible that anybody would be able to make Android Apps. I'm here to tell you that it is possible! Plus, you never have to write a single line of code! In this course I teach you how to use a tool called App Inventor 2 to make Android Apps using an easy mouse-driven drag and drop block system to make your app work. You build the user interface visually, and then just click the blocks together using the mouse to make it work.

Big Data is impacting many areas of science, engineering, and industry; from analyzing troves of weather data to modeling traffic patterns to processing millions of online customers, it is the enormous data which is creating new opportunities and challenges. To tackle these challenges, one must have the training to store, manage, process and analyze data at these scales. But the challenges are beyond scale alone, the complexity of the data requires new powerful analytical techniques. Master the concepts of HDFS and MapReduce framework. Understand Hadoop 2.x Architecture. Setup Hadoop Cluster and write Complex MapReduce programs. Learn data loading techniques using Sqoop and Flume. Perform data analytics using Pig, Hive and YARN. Implement HBase and MapReduce integration. Implement Advanced Usage and Indexing. Schedule jobs using Oozie. Implement best practices for Hadoop development. Work on a real life Project on Big Data Analytics. Understand Spark and its Ecosystem. Learn how to work in RDD in Spark.

One of the kids at our data camp asked me, which science is this - biology, physics, chemistry? I told her (really a her!) that it is a science which helps all the sciences you talked about, and that is what is pretty much what is happening. Data science is in some sense a decision and inference science, a method, which helps to do quite a bit around us. Still, kids through K to 12 hardly have an exposure to it. Their only exposure comes through some physics lab experiments or economics in high school. Unfortunately, a lot of statistics taught within math is about cramming formulas for mean, median and standard deviation! We see data and data science exploding around us -more and more businesses (and even governments) make decisions based on data, rather than qualitative analysis or expert views. Also, our way of thinking about things has turned statistical - the answer to a question is not yes/no, but an effect size with a confidence interval, or stated simply, the likelihood (chance) of the answer being yes is some percent value (if you did not get either of these, take a data science course now!). This has paid dividends - both to understand the world better and solve problems which we couldn't solve earlier. Notably, it also helps individuals reason and solve problems better in their day to day life. We need to do be giving kids early exposure to data science - the theoretical statistical part, often so beautiful! and more so, the practical - being able to infer from data and predict.

Python is a widely used high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability, and its syntax allows programmers to express concepts in fewer lines of code than would be possible in languages such as C++ or Java. The language provides constructs intended to enable clear programs on both a small and large scale.

No background knowledge is required. We'll help you install Python and get going from there. Python is a great programming language to learn with. It has a shallow learning curve - going from nothing to "Hello world" is much faster than in most other languages. It is intuitive - the syntax was designed to follow the principle of least surprise, and it is very consistent overall (unfortunately, the standard libraries don't always follow this consistency). It requires very little boilerplate: a typical "Hello world" is one line of code, and simple programs can be written without any additional background noise that needs to be explained (such as function declaration keywords, import statements, class constructs, preprocessor directives, etc.). There are excellent, straightforward tools to work with python code, especially the interactive interpreter; you don't need to learn a build system, IDE, special text editor, or anything else to start using python - a command prompt, the interactive editor, and a simple text editor, are all you need It uses dynamic typing, but unlike many other dynamically-typed languages, types are transparent, and type-related pitfalls are rare.

An MIT project specifically designed for kids ages 8 to 16, Scratch has been used by educators and parents around the world to help kids develop animations, interactive stories, and games through drag-and-drop code blocks. It was the first programming tool I introduced my son to, when I was taking a programming course a few years ago. I remember saying, "Hey, Raghav, isn't this amazing? By changing this block I can make this dog meow like a cat." He was hooked ever since. Scratch remains our favorite programming tool, mainly because it offers so much control. It's like Hopscotch, but more robust, and like App Inventor, but more user-friendly. In Scratch, there's a huge gallery of objects you can use or customize. (Don't underestimate the importance for a kid of coloring a character just so.) And with the vast array of methods available, you can make them do just about anything. Raghav wanted to make a game called "Car Racing" (like usual car race games, but rather than racing we had to save object from racing car), and the only tool we've discussed so far that could really pull this off is Scratch.
